Product Description

Garmin continues to build up its nüvi 7xx series portableGPS navigators with its nüvi 755T, which adds a number of handy routing and communication features to an already impressive list of specs, including a 4.3-inch widescreen display, text-to-speech capabilities, media player, and FM transmitter for transmitting audio--including directions and MP3 music and audiobooks--from the device to your car radio.

Garmin's nüvis pack top of the line features into a slim form factor..
New to the nüvi 7x5 lineup is Garmin's HotFix satellite prediction (which locates your position quickly and precisely), Lane Assist (which provides lane guidance and junction views when possible), automatic time zone transitioning, and 3D Building views as well as Garmin Connect Photos to help you visually ascertain your position. Additionally, the nüvi 755T includes free real-time traffic updates from Navteq (for the life of the device) via the included GTM 20 traffic receiver.

The Garmin nüvi 7x5 Series
  • nüvi 755T: North American maps, GTM 20 traffic receiver with lifetime traffic
  • nüvi 765T: Adds Bluetooth handsfree communication; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic
  • nüvi 775T: Pre-loaded European and North American maps; includes GTM 20 receiver, lifetime traffic, Bluetooth
  • nüvi 785T: Adds enhanced MSN Direct traffic receiver; includes North American maps and Bluetooth
As with all nüvis, you get Garmin reliability, the fast satellite lock of an integrated high-sensitivity receiver, a slim, pocket-sized design with a gorgeous display, an easy, intuitive interface, and detailed NAVTEQ maps for North America (United States, Canada and Puerto Rico) with more than 6 million name-searchable points of interest. The Garmin nüvi 7x5 line features three other models--check out their spec highlights at the right and click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nüvi GPS navigators.

The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

The nüvi 755T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.

Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. For more information, see page 5 of the product manual.

With Lane Guidance, the nüvi alerts you to which lane you need to be in for upcoming turns. In the image above, the three middle lanes of this seven-lane highway are highlighted.

With Junction View, you'll get photo-realistic 3D views upcoming turns with signage--signs not needed for navigation are faded.
Lane Guidance
With the new Lane Guidance feature built into the nüvi 7x5 series, you'll never question which lane you should be driving in again. It provides you with a view of what lane you should be in for upcoming turns. And with the 3D Lane Assist Junction View, you'll be able to see a photo-realistic screen that shows you both the road detail as well as the signs as you will see them on the road. The signs that aren't needed for navigation are faded compared to the appropriate lane signage.

Integrated Traffic Receiver
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated GTM 20 FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. No subscriptions or additional hardware needed. Just open the box, turn it on, and get instant access to traffic information--the traffic updates are free for the life of the device.

All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time. Watch informational video

In most areas, the traffic broadcasts are continuous--there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

HotFix Satellite Prediciton
Garmin's HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about). A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Where Am I? Where's My Car?
The nüvi 7x5 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where’s my car?" At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nüvi 7x5s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.

Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos

Using Garmin's Connect Photos Web site, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google's Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide.

Was it a defective unit, or are they all bad

Review Date: March 21, 2010
Reviewer: Christian R. Manasco, Lebanon, Oregon USA
I titled it defective because part of me wants to think that I just had a bad apple; however I did read another reviewer having similar issues specifically with regard to the typing. The worst problem I had with this was when typing I'd often get a wrong letter, ok so I understand you have to get your finger in an exact spot, but the worst part was when trying to backspace which is the far upper most right corner of the unit I'd get letters no where near where I was touching! That was incredibly annoying and happened about 40% of the time! Not just annoying but dangerous when driving.

In addition to the bad typing I found this unit have the time would take too long to initiate directions, sometimes would just follow the route and I'd have to make a turn or two on my own before it would start speaking actual street names. Sometime recalculations were just too slow to be useful.

Like I said, I may have just had a defective unit but have read similar problems elsewhere so I would have to advise staying away from this product. I returned mine and am now going to try a TomTom.
Garmin Is Going Downhill

Review Date: March 21, 2010
Reviewer: Goodspike, Seattle, WA USA
First I'll start with my background. I've owned a number of low end Garmins in the past (e.g. i3, 205, X10), a Dash unit, and a high end Magellan which I returned due to poor routing. My Dash unit has been my favorite, even with its routing issues, but it is starting to have operational issues, so I need something to replace it.

I ended up returning this product because the touch screen is very irritating to use. Others have complained about this issue, so apparently a number of the units are defective, or there's a design flaw. The problem is that if you clearly hit a button there's about a 20% chance that it will think you hit some other button, and about a 10% chance that other button isn't even adjacent to the button you hit. Sometimes it's not even on the same side of the screen. It makes entering addresses or even trying to zoom the map very annoying, especially when there's about a 20% chance the delete button will add another incorrect character rather than delete the incorrect character. I could have probably lived with the other shortcomings of this unit, but this one made me long for the wheel entry system of the old i3.

In the past I've liked Garmin products because even their low end products (e.g. i3) had good routing and a number of decent setup choices. This product is not necessarily low end, but the setup choices just seem to be lacking compared to prior products. For example, there is no choice for how or if the map zooms (and quite frankly I never figured out fully how it does zoom--it doesn't seem to be at all consistent). Simply stated, this product feels like a very low end product in the configuration options. I really don't understand that because options are programming, and programming is cheap.

I bought this unit primarily for the traffic feature. I didn't keep the unit long enough to deal with severe traffic issues, but I did see it react to some minor issues. It's very transparent--really too transparent. The display does show how much of a time delay you have from traffic. By hitting that button you can then select to see the traffic map, the site of the traffic issue, or simply search all traffic in the general area. Unfortunately if you hit the first choice, it is likely that the map is zoomed into your current location, no matter what the zoom choice was at the time on the main map, or what your zoom choice was the last time you looked at the traffic map. So the first choice isn't all that useful while driving. The second choice (site of the traffic issue) isn't that good either, because although it shows you that area, it doesn't show you traffic in other areas so you can determine your own way around the traffic. Simply put, you're operating in the dark a bit with this product.

A few more things about traffic. It only works when the unit is plugged into 12V, because the receiver is part of the cord. And the trade-off for free traffic is apparently ads on your screen. They are not that annoying, but not useful either.

Routing was pretty typical Garmin, although I did note one instance where it was the same as the Magellan I returned for routing issues. When it calculates the route there is no indication of what route it calculated. It just tells you where to start navigating. Again, seemingly rather low end.

Other than the touch screen issues, and the lack of any "WOW" factor for this product, my other main complaint would be the Garmin computer software and website. Updating the maps was somewhat of a pain, with there being periods where you weren't really sure if it was doing anything or if you needed to do something else to start the next step. It's a step up from prior Garmin website issues, but it's still not real consumer friendly. I would imagine their website generates a lot of tech support calls, although I did not find that necessary. Also, if you install the POI software, there's no shortcut created on your computer to run it again in the future. You're left to reinstall the POI software each time you want to run it (or try to find where it's installed, which I didn't bother to do yet).

A few final items. I didn't test at all any of the media features, so I can't comment on them. The unit did crash at one point when I hit the "back" button. I would suspect that was perhaps a touchscreen issue, with the GPS unit perhaps not knowing what I had really asked it to do. The plug for the traffic connector is sort of awkward to connect and disconnect, but it does seem to be sturdy. Oh, and the Garmin Lock (anti-theft) feature only allows you one try. If you get it wrong only once you have to return home to use your GPS again. That is rather extreme, especially with a device that has a defective touchscreen.

IT works really well. The only issue we have had with it is that it was advertised blue tooth compatible but it is not. In addition to view your pics, you must first go online to format for your nuvi. All in all a nice device. Traffic detour works like a charm.
IT's good!!!

Lived in California all my life--"many years" And felt I knew how to get to anywhere I wanted to go...However, Went to Stanford to a lecture from Marin--Did Mapquest for route--worked fine except ,when leaving for home it was DARK-could not see street signs..and the route i came in on was full of no left turns..If it had not been for the directional letters on my rear view mirror I would have ended up in San Jose..I had to stop at Starbucks to get direction to get back to freeway...
Love my GPS...used it to re-route when I tried to take short-cut in Sacramento to get around roadwork...
Thank you GPS
