All Aboard Thomas the Train!
The Thomas and Friends Train Set is more than a railroad--it's a large, colorful train yard where kids can reroute Thomas and make a number of exciting train-car repairs. Much of the action is centered around the Sodor Steamworks, where kids can operate a crane with a claw that lifts Thomas into the air, or rotate a dial that spins Thomas around in a rotating pod.

With railroad switches located at intervals along the track, kids can send Thomas along one of two routes into the steamworks. The flip of a switch will send Thomas out of the steamworks and around the track again. Otherwise, Thomas remains in the rotating pod, where kids can slide the crane into position, and then lower the claws to grasp and lift Thomas into the air. Other options include rotating Thomas with the spinner dial or turning on the repair tool to generate flashing lights and sound.

Reroute to the Sodor Steamworks for Exciting Repairs
Because younger children may initially find it difficult to operate the crane or spin the rotating pod on their own, helpful instructions for play are included. Adults may want to demonstrate how to slide the crane into position and engage the claw to lift or drop Thomas.

In order for Thomas to make a complete loop around the track, the rotating pod must be manually positioned in its proper place, and a switch must be disengaged. It may take children a few tries before they are able to send Thomas smoothly in and out of the pod, but with a little help from adults, kids will love their dual role as conductor and repair specialist.

The Thomas and Friends Train Set measures 24 x 15 (W x D) inches and works best on hard surfaces. Adults will want to assist with assembly, which takes approximately 30 minutes with the help of illustrated instructions. While the repair tool comes with batteries already installed, adults will need to help install the train's one double AA battery (not included).

Must Have Birthday Present

Review Date: June 15, 2010
Reviewer: J. Y. Kitchens,
Our grandson saw this on the internet while watching Thomas videos and HAD to have it. He asked for it for months and would have been sorely disappointed if was not given to him at his 4th birthday party. He loves it but it is hard for him to operate the crane that is used to lift the train, it requires more strength to push it than you would expect. Of course his parents are willing to help so he still plays with it. He was a very happy birthday boy!
A very frustrating toy for my four year old

Reviewer: C. Tracy,
This was a birthday gift for my son. He was so excited to get it and help set it up. However, like a lot of toys, the commercial we saw on the DVD was way more cool than the actual toy. The grabber is difficult to operate and the motion is repetitive so it gets boring really fast. My older son can help fix the toy when it gets stuck, but he doesn't like Thomas much any more so it is useless for the age group it is intended for.
Great toy but in Plastic and doesn't work with other Thomas Rails

I bought this for my 4 yr old son. He loves Thomas and probably so far has so many Thomas & Friends toys (spoiled! yeah I know). He has been asking for this since he saw it in one of Thomas DVD's "Hero fo the Rail" and eventually got this along with "Hiro" train. He absolutely loves it and it's actually fun playing with. Yes, I've played with the toy along with my son and it's pretty cool. However, I am quite disappointed that this is made of plastic. Given that the structure is in plastic, but can't believe even the Thomas the train and rails included in this package is in plastic! What happened to wooden trains and rails? When did HIT Entertainment change its product specification from wood to plastics? Another desperate way to cut costs after that lead paint incident? There are so many Thomas toys, and I expect, at least, ones from authorized makers to coordinate that they all work/link together. In this case, this product doesn't really link up with other wooden rails, which is pathetic. Given consumers are paying almost $50, in addition to those overpriced other trains, we should and DO expect these toys to maintain the quality and safety, not to mention be able to play all them together. I am ok with them coming up with new ones forever so parents cuff up more and more, but at least expect to get our money's worth. Wouldn't you agree? So sad....
best thomas train set

My son received this set as a gift from his aunt. One of the key goals of any train layout is creating turns and loops so that a train can reverse direction. Well, this innovative train set has a very clever mechanism that allows the train to be turned around with a crank. The mechanics are fascinating and my son loves it. It took me a few hours of playtime with this with my son using two trains to come up with the right pattern of steps to keep both trains moving around the track. My 4 year old son learned to handle half the switches and I handled the other ones. This was great fun.
We have two other Thomas track sets, a wooden one and take-along Thomas, and THIS is the only type of track that he can put together by himself. That makes this the favorite and a nice transition to electric trains.
So far, this toy has exceeded all expectations and has proved itself quite durable. Although the claw might sometimes (1 in 10 attempts) "miss" the pickup, we've found that the partial (one side) pickup still allows it to move the assembly just fine. The challenge of "getting it right" with a good technique makes this fun.
We HIGHLY RECOMMEND this train set.
Enjoy it.
Difficult to assemble and use

This is a cute toy that I bought for my grandson, but he definitely needed an adult to help him put it together. The moving parts were rather difficult to operate for a 4-year-old, but this was the toy he had his heart set on. This toy was not available locally, and it might have helped to have seen one set up in a store, but I doubt it.
